Is CIFMarkets a scam?
CIFMarkets leads with a South African FSCA number that does not authorise it to write the product it sells. We rate it Scam.
FSP and ODP are not the same licence
The site cites FSCA FSP 54857, held by Aclive Wealth Advisory (Pty) Ltd, at 1 Hood Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg.
South African law separates two things:
- A Financial Services Provider licence under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act covers giving advice and acting as an intermediary. It is a real licence, and it is a licence to introduce and advise.
- An OTC Derivative Provider authorisation under the Financial Markets Act is what a firm needs to issue or write a CFD as principal, which is to say to be the counterparty on the other side of your trade.
CIFMarkets publishes an FSP number. We found no ODP authorisation published anywhere on its site. Unauthorised ODP activity in South Africa carries penalties up to R15 million and ten years.
The distinction is not obscure to the industry and it is invisible to a customer, which is what makes an FSP number effective as a credential when it is the wrong one. The same gap appears at NXG Markets and at MaxifyFX. AvaTrade, a far larger firm, also discloses an FSP number and no ODP.
What is not published at all
Beyond the licence question, CIFMarkets publishes no trading terms. No spread table, no commission schedule, no swap rates, no withdrawal fees or processing times. The minimum deposit is $250 and leverage runs to 1:200; what a trade costs is not disclosed before you open an account.
Paying agents sit between you and the firm in the payment chain, which is worth knowing when you are working out who actually holds your money.
How to check this yourself
Open the FSCA's register and search FSP 54857. Read the licence categories on the entry. Then search the FSCA's separate list of authorised OTC Derivative Providers for the same company. If it is not there, the firm is not authorised to be your counterparty in South Africa, whatever number is in the footer.
For contrast, Exness names its ODP authorisation explicitly and identifies which entity holds it. That is what correct disclosure looks like, and it is why we treat the gap here as a finding rather than an oversight.
