Is SmartSTP a scam?

We rate SmartSTP High Risk. A Swiss police reporting platform has listed it, its review score is around 1.9, and a claim that it is a rebrand of an earlier broker sits unaddressed on its own site. None of those is a financial regulator's enforcement action, and together they are enough to warn a reader.

The Swiss listing, described precisely

SmartSTP appears on a warning list published by the Zurich cantonal police cybercrime unit, dated 12 August 2024.

That is worth stating exactly, because it is easy to inflate. This is a police reporting platform recording sites the public has reported, not FINMA, and it is not a financial-regulator enforcement action or a licence revocation. It means people in Switzerland reported the site and the police published it. That is a real signal and it is a smaller one than a regulator's blacklist.

The licence

The operating entity is MRL Investments (MU) Ltd, at 7th Floor, Tower 1, NeXTeracom, Cybercity Ebene 72201, Mauritius, under FSC Mauritius licence GB21027168. Minimum deposit $250, leverage to 1:200.

Mauritius is a genuine regulator with a public register, and it comes with no compensation scheme. If the firm fails, nothing pays you out.

The rebrand claim

Third-party reports describe SmartSTP as a rebrand of an earlier broker, Equiity. We could not confirm it from a primary source, so we do not state it as a finding. What we can state is that SmartSTP does not address the claim anywhere on its own site.

That silence matters more than the claim does. A rebrand is ordinary and legitimate; brokers change names for many reasons. A broker that has been publicly accused of carrying a previous brand's history and says nothing about it is choosing to leave a reader unable to check.
